A blog to remember Gilles Laurent, who died in Brussels Attack in the middle of making his film about Fukushima / this blog is organized by his wife Reiko Udo

It is important to be known.

I saw paretns of high school students who were found dead yesterday in those snowy mountains on TV and cried together. I can really understand their feelings as a family. At the same time, I thought they were so brave that they could speak in front of cameras.

Today of one year ago, I flew to Paris for Gilles' funeral. (Brussels airport was closed and I flew there and moved to Brussels by Talys.) My emotion was too much and I was never able to reveal the fact that my husband was missing to mass media. I just hid it except my friends from work, family members, and close friends who had recent contacts. I left my kids to my parents and flew to Europe with a devastated heart.

Inside the airplane, I saw the film 'My little Prince and I'. It was a film which Gilles took kids with and had liked it very much, saying 'It was a good film for adults too. It is about how to be free.' My emotion was too much again.

On 31st of March, when the funeral was finished, I saw an article of New York Times about Gilles. When I read it, my eys were caught for one line, 'He was making a film of Fukushima', Actually I had forgot completely about the film until then. But at this moment my new motivation was born. I did not want his death to result in vain. I found something to do. I sent an email to my boss of my workplace right away to ask if I was able to accept offers from mass media.

A while later, I actually had an email from a Brussels branch of a Japanese newspaper company. They had found my name sounding definitely like that of Japanese and they wanted to know about my feeling and what kind of person Gilles was. The email was very polite and I visited their office very cowardly. The article was issued about one month later, which was the timing of two weeks later from Kumamoto eartuquake and the article became a little bit small.

I am surprised with the change tha happened after one year. I wonder where my cowardness went. Now I accept everything. People of the distributing company works really well and their organisation is great. I accepted everything with thankfulness until today. And I never had any bad feelings untin now luckily.

Once I googled my name and I found a word 'attention seeker' coming after space. I was surprised, and at the same time I laughed. I will not deny it because without outstanding, how could I advertise the film ? The director does not exist and the film needs a face. I am determined not to let his death end for nothing.

I realised that one year chaned the situation so much.

I wish it was not my self-satisfaction. I wonder if Gilles is watching me nearby. But sometines I have a strange feeling. When I hear good comments about the film, I have tears in my eys but I feel the tears do not come from me. I feel it comes from Gilles' heart. It is such a strange feeling... my body is just a media at such times.

Mr. Okuyama, the distributing producer was saying to me, 'Udo-san. It is better to decide to be outstanding. It is better not to hesitate. 30 times will not be enough to be known. 100 times can work finally and you will feel the film and you are known.' Maybe it is true... I will still continue to be like an 'attention-seeker' ;)

With so much gratitude.

My Belgian family

f:id:Gillesfilm:20170327065254j:plain

These are family photos of Belgian side. My father-in-law made thse magnet types and sent them to me.

I knew Gills was finally dead on this day of exactly one year ago. So 27th of March is like a second unforgettable anniversary for me.

I saw an email saying 'please call us by skype,Reiko' on this morning from my sister-in-law, exactly like the morning of 23rd. I had prepared my feeling a little bit, and I saw faces of my family members in Belgium. They were looking at me with worried faces, and told me after one pause. "Reiko, Gilles is dead". My body went backward and I looked up the sky covering my face with my hands.

"Do you know what kind of funeral he wanted ? .... Ok, we will do in that way. We will be waiting for you".

They alerady knew that he was dead in the evening of 26th. The police came to my sister-in-law's house in Brussels first, and she went to another sister's place and so on...finally everybody was in Bouillon where my parents-in-law live. They avoided to tell by phone and they gathered in this way. When we spoke by skype, I think they had already cried a lot and they had waited until I called.

My precious family members in Belgium. We all used to get along and we visited each other often when we were living there for three years. Belgium is a small country and we could drive to each other's place easily. They lost the center of the family and are still in great grieve. Our bonds are tighter, but the loss is still huge.

But our bright topic is Gilles' children. We all hope for their growth as they are the ones Gilles left. Now we do not see him anymore on screen of Skype, but the energetic girls appear, jumping and making funny faces.

How we could have a world without terrorism.

f:id:Gillesfilm:20170325140055j:plain

One year after the Brussels Attack on 22nd of March, I received a lot of message from all over the world to Gilles Laurent, who died as a film director. Many people came to the theater at night for him here in Tokyo. I would like to express my sincere gratitude again here.

He was able to return to Tokyo with a new figure 'a film', and each person is giviing me wonderful comments about it, saying 'This has a special lingering feeling'. He should be very happy.

At the exact moment of 9:11 am in Belgian time, they stopped all the metros, buses, and trams and they all prayed for the victims. Silence praying... applauding... They planted 32 birch trees in circle in the park nearby. They all show that they never forget.

I went to pick up the girls earlier on the day and we prayed at home at the same moment together for him. We prepared his favorite Japanese dinner such as sashimi, nabé, rice with natto and spoke a lot about him, joking 'The dinner for papa is still plenty. Is he really eating ? If not, we will eat !'

I hear that people become very light and free after losing the body and can travel anywere in the world quickly. He must have been very busy saying thank you to lots of people on the globe from one place to another.

Then exactlly on the same day...

The terrorism attack again happened in London. Each time we sigh, 'Again...' and we just discuss about the place and the number of dead people. But please remember. Behind each victim, there are hundreds of family members and friends who are forced to be shocked and grieve.

But what these people start to wish is not a revenge, I think. What we really wish is to have the world without any 'new' terrorists and the society which is rooted with love.

At least I keep thinking of why.  What kind of childhood did they have ?  How were their parents ? What was the hall of heart in them ? What kind of brainwash sneaked into them as a final touch ? Where is the origin of evilness ? At least I wish the society will go forward to the direction of investigating all these really important issues.

To prevent with police system might be necessary for some extent, but just with superficial measures, nothing will change. Sometimes I feel that the air-boms or usage of the word 'we fight against terrorism' is just excuses of politicians who are not families of victims. To fight against means to be on the same stage. I always think by myself, 'I never asked such a thing'.

"We will never give in terrorism". Yes, it goes without saying. Because how could human beings give in to the existence which has lost humanity ? Then what shoud we do ? We just should focus on the fact that they were once human, at leaset when they were born. There will be no other way than to think about this fact, to aim for a society without terrorism.

Maybe Gilles will be regretting a little bit that he was not able to make another film, saying 'If people like my movie very much like this, I wish I could have made more...' with a smile on his face.

Sorry it was not possible and it is a pity, Gilles... But to make the world better, even a little bit. Please keep helping and inspiring us.

I wonder if he flew to London too.

What Gilles taught me ~on his death anniversary~

f:id:Gillesfilm:20170322005552j:plain

The last photo of Gilles I took was this one. In summer of 2015, at French Institute in Kagurazaka, with our two daughters.

Since I lost my husband suddenly in such a terrible way, lots of people confessed to me about death of their close people. Fathers and mothers. Husbands and wives. Brothers and sisters. Not only due to sickness and accidents ,but also to suicides. Babies in progress. Precious friends.

Eacth time I kept thinking about the meaning of life which forces you to continue to see the death of your beloved ones. And I kept thinking about the true happiness. Then I found my own answer recently. Actually Gilles taught me what it is.

It is to be able to feel sad and cry over someone you loved. It is to be able to have such emotions. Very human feelings. No matter how short they lived or how they died. The fact that there was somebody who gave you happiness, and the fact that you had human feellings to feel and receive it. Those are the true happiness.

On the other hand, the unhappiest thing in this world is not to be able to have such a feeling. It is erased and they commit the worst crime such as indiscriminate terrorism. They were born as human beings but they did not become human. Is there any unhappier thing in this world ? They are the ones who were the most unfortunate and had the worst lives

So I am determined never to curse them ever as I did not before. I am determined with Gilles again here.

It is exactly one year since Gilles died. I decided also to start praying for them with mercy.

I will cry every year on this day, 22nd of March. But at the same time my tears show the amount of happiness that I have. I declare to keep being the happiest person with full emotion and full happiness.

Gilles, you were often sensitive and meticulous. So my rough behaviour often irritated you, sorry. But sometimes you told me that my such slow attitude was helping you at the same time.

When there were problems, you often told me with a smile on your face, "We will find a solution". I will never forget that voice.

You will be my hero forever.

Thank you for appearing in and changing my life wonderfully.

Cinema is a cocoon.

I appreciate the fact that the film is spoken a lot on newspapers and TVs because the story surrounding it is already 'a story'. But at the same time I am afraid that the quality of the film always becomes like a third topic.

At the same time I wonder if people feel pressure because they have to face and think about a lot of problems, knowing the location Fukushima and the loss of director's life. Then maybe they feel they cannot 'enjoy' the film and hesitate to go to the theater.

But there is one thing I would like to insist. This film is a film which you can purely enjoy as a film. And its genuine quality is not a warning or punishment, but is a healing. So I would really like to recommend to go to the theater. Perhaps you can feel even energetic more than after being inside an oxigen cupsule.

The experience is close to be inside a cradle. You are there to open your eys of heart, and listen to the sound. This is an old-fashioned way of saying, but it is like a virtual reality...

There is no back ground music, no narrations. It just appeals to your five senses. That is why lots of people say this documentary film is not pushy at all. The rhythm is quite slow but on the other hand you cannot stop watching and never becomes sleepy. You wonder how this will end, and you are surprised to witness the ending and cannot move for a while...  But you realise that you feel re-born and are able to come back to this real world.

It is an experience of the body coming back to the status of a baby gradually. Your five senses are sharper, and you feel your cells or even DNAs are now back in good positions.

A while ago, I called this film as 're-born machine of Gilles Laurent'. But now it is already an old idea. This film can even be a re-born machine for the people who watch it. Separated from the daily business and obligational feelings about problems, you can re-face the world calmly with refreshed feelings. The world that has lots of problems, but at the same time lots of beautiful things.

To remember of your natural five senses is to be connected with the world in a new way, with confidence in yourself. I dare to say it is even to be happier. I have experienced this feeling already as one audience many times. Well, I must say I felt sleepy briefly finally when I was watching it for the eighth time.

I would like people to experience this 'cocoon' feeling. There could be a little bit of pain, but it is similar to have a vaccination of heart. One day this film was spoken in one columns of a famous beauty magazine's website in Japan. It was actually thanks to courtesy of my publishing company, but maybe it was not a coincidence. To live with vivid five senses must lead to people's health and beauty as animals.

Seven years after

f:id:Gillesfilm:20170315144835j:plain

Today is the wedding anniversary of Gilles and me.

I realise that the date is exactly beween 3.11 and 3.22. I wonder if there is any fate or charma expressed about these dates.

We went to the city hall together seven years ago, by a small train called Setagaya-line. The preparation of documents was quite complicated as it was an international marriage. So after some visits, the final registration was made on this day. I remember the time when we left with smile on our faces.

Today in Europe people do not ‘marry’ so often. Instead, they resister themselves as partners (as they can have almost the same rights as marriage.) If you say you will get married with someone to your friends, I hear that they will be amazed saying, ‘Wow, how romantic you are’. I explained to Gilles that Japan is quite classical about marriage, and he understood and kindly followed the procedure.

Exactly seven years since that day… my life changed so dramatically.

Gilles’ family members and friends know him for years and years. On the other hand I just know him only for less than eight years, since we met each other less than one year before this marriage.

Appeared like a breeze, and disappeared like a breeze again…

Did he really exist ? I even doubt, but there are two children with faces similar to us, and there is one film left in front of me. And they all shout to me, ‘Look at me ! Look at me!’ Only Gilles himself disappeared one day.

Joie, gratitude, WA

There are three words engraved inside our two marriage rings. Joy, gratitude, and harmony. We used both of our mother-tongue, and English which connected us.

Three words are split between the second word, and if we combine two rings, three words are completed. It was a nice idea of romantic Gilles.

I confess that he returned his ring to me two or three times after we argued. (Then he wanted it back each time.) Maybe the message inside the ring must have been feeling useless by itself in those days. Sorry. After all, these rings are full of our memory .

The other day I just found a bracelet with a small bird from the same maker, and I decided to buy it as a new start for us.

I have a special emotion for birds.

Gilles used to love a flock of birds flying freely in the evening sky. There are still woods in Suginami, and you can sometimes catch the view of those flying birds. He was always gazing them, and he had named it as ‘Birds of a concert’. Yes it looks like an orchestra, conducted by an imaginary tact of a conductor called God ? Regardless of where it is… whenever he found it, he was full of joy and said ‘I really like this’.

He had taught about this naming to the children. So whenever we pass by the place with a bike and find a flock of birds, our girls shout, ‘Ah ! Birds of an concert!’.

Is he flying with those birds in the sky now ? After losing the heavy body and becoming like air now ? I always remember of his special love to the nature whenever our children shout like this to the sky.

The booklet of the film is completed. Its cover is symbolically figs.

Finally 'La Terre Abandonnée' is released to public.

The booklet about the film is sold at theaters. You can read the discussion between Mr. Okuyama, the distributing producer and me inside it, and we are speaking about Gilles' first 'project book'. This is the original.

He was really concentrated in writing for a long time... all his thoughts and efforts are in it. It has 99 pages. That was from the end of 2014 to the beginning of 2015. He kept writing and writing (maybe correcting also) inside the bullet train to Kitakyushu-city, where my hometown is, and also at my parents' house with the support of coffee from my mother.

He writes of the synopsys, note of intention and so on precisely and earnestly. The important part is tranlated into Japanese and you can read in the book solde at theaters.

Mr. Matsumura in blue T-shirt is already impressive enough. He took these photos when he went to Tomoioka town to think about the plot.

When Mr. Okuyama saw this project book for the first time, he was amazed saying 'Wow... everyone in Belgium make something like this for films?  Great. If I see something like this, I would say OK right away, just trusting this passion.

I do not know if everyone makes something like this, but he made this to submit to the competition to get necessary money from some foundations. He won the minimum budget of about 3 million yen. But with this, everything started.

This is the seed of everything.

I remember well his back facing the computer with concentration as if it was yesterday.

This seed has become a plant and is going to have flowers soon. It will have seeds again for the future. I hope the seeds will keep living and grow in people's hearts. Wonderfully, the cover of the new booklet was 'seeds'.
